-MATHEUS has a comprehensive process. As an artist, his overall vision is a reaction to feelings and expressions, perceptions, interactions and emotions from his life - feelings that have been growing inside over a period of time or have appeared suddenly. He believes that only real experience can teach us about life. Matheus has travelled in search of influence and has created paintings of his responses to the world around him. Matheus does not sketch. He begins every piece by conceptually thinking about emotions. He stays with these feelings in his mind for a while without painting them, then it’s as if he wakes up in a room full of paintings he made. Emotions and perceptions poured into paintings or textural collages that represent reactions from his adventures. What the viewer sees reflected in the paint is the result of a reaction to a particular moment . What does it mean? It means that Matheus believes that the process has to be intellectually creative and logically driven by the emotion of that inspirational moment . “The glass creates the illusion of a third dimension. The paint is applied on one side, so when it is flipped, the paint comes through to create an additional layer. The perception of the paint through the glass is what makes the image so visceral.
Imagine a painting as it relates to a human body. We have layers of skin, then organs contained by muscles and ligaments. Each organ is a layer with a different function, and represents different subjects. My paintings are the result of layers and textures of experiences and emotions, learned at different times from different cultures and people.
