Originally from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Matheus grew up doing art in the streets. He moved to New York City in 2009, and began to take classes to improve his knowledge of architectural design. He took traditional art and fashion classes along with his interior design courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Matheus is greatly influenced by the city he now calls home -- New York has long been the epicenter of fashion, hip hop, and street art, where he feels his interest in contemporary art, architecture, and interior design has grown exponentially. With this influence, he produced his first solo exhibition and debuted his signature series, Caras e Cores, at Avant Garde Gallery in the Lower East Side, as seen in New York Magazine in late 2014. Global Citizen selected him as the featured artist for their annual charity art show in Soho and he has completed several private commissions around New York and abroad.
Matheus designed and produced his first line of furniture in 2014 for a highly publicized exhibition, Brasilian Soul, in his hometown, which sold out and resulted in design partnerships with interior architecture firms. After that success, he exported the pieces for Art Basel Miami’s Wynwood Lab, which was the first time his furniture was available for sale Stateside. It was then sold at Jalan Jalan in the Design District in Miami.
STYLE IS THE LIMIT is the title of Matheus’ 2015 solo exhibition; he shared several series that spoke to his roots, his process, and his future; “as far as I can go in my own style; my style is the limit.” STYLE IS THE LIMIT defines his outlook on creativity and the future of his work. The exhibition covered a multitude of styles and subjects. Hosted by Gallery 151 in Chelsea, this exhibition had an overwhelming turnout. Matheus looked to take the works to an additional venue and was invited to bring a collection of pieces from STYLE IS THE LIMIT to Provocateur for 2 week-long exhibitions. Provocateur is an exclusive New York hotspot.
Matheus is the inaugural artist at Manhattan’s SmART Space Studios where he produces in the United States. In 2016, Matheus exposed works internationally at Art Shanghai and in Venice, Italy in a year-closing group show at historical Palazzo Flangini.
Stateside, in 2016, Matheus had some major installations in Chicago and New York. StART Up Art Fair Chicago, which runs concurrent with EXPO Chicago, is a new concept in the art fair circuit; taking over a hotel and giving each artist a suite to display their art. at this fair, Matheus met carol nasaw the former senior lecturer of the MCA Chicago, who is currentlyselling his works to her vast network. Back in New York, Matheus participated in group art and fashion exposition, ARTFALL, in Chelsea’s Capture Gallery. To close out the year, Matheus was selected as the second artist in residence for the new arts program at the freshly renovated Hotel on Rivington. Curator, Hitomi Sasaki, selected 21 of Matheus’ pieces to be displayed throughout the hotel, restaurant, and club.
Starting off 2017 Matheus was selected to participate in the NYC-based residency program, FUSION ARTS, in Kaga, Japan, where he lived and created works with 12 other artists for 6 weeks. He is currently preparing for shows in Chicago, New York, the Hamptons, London, Sao Paulo, and Dubai. These will all take place during 2018.
